Check your mutual fund against its benchmark index fund

mfcheck compares any equity mutual fund with an index fund from the same category: a large cap fund with a Nifty 50 index fund, a flexi cap or multi cap fund with a Nifty 500 index fund, a mid cap fund with a Nifty Midcap 150 index fund, and a small cap fund with a Nifty Smallcap 250 index fund.

You see trailing returns over 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 10 years, the difference from the index fund each period, and rolling 3-year returns that show how often the fund's return was higher than the index fund's.

SIP return calculator with index fund, FD and gold comparison

Enter your monthly SIP amount, start month and SIP date. mfcheck buys units at each actual NAV, values them at the latest NAV and shows the XIRR. The same SIP is run in the category index fund, a Nifty 50 index fund, a gold fund and a bank FD, so you can see what each would be worth today.

Lumpsum calculator

For a one-time investment, enter the amount and date to see its value today and CAGR, next to the same amount in index funds, gold and an FD.

Questions

What does mfcheck compare?

Your mutual fund's historical returns with an index fund from the same category (for example a Nifty Midcap 150 index fund for a mid cap fund), a Nifty 50 index fund, a gold fund and a bank FD. All numbers come from published NAVs.

Why index funds rather than the index itself?

An index fund is something you could actually have invested in. Its NAV includes its costs and dividends, so it is a like-for-like comparison with your fund's NAV.

Why does my fund show the Nifty 50 index fund instead of its category index?

Some category index funds only started in 2019 or later. When the period you choose begins before that, the Nifty 50 index fund is used instead, and the results say so.

Which funds are supported?

Growth options of open-ended equity funds whose category has a matching index fund: large cap, large & mid cap, mid cap, small cap, flexi cap, multi cap, focused, value, contra, dividend yield and ELSS. Direct plans are compared with Direct plan index funds, Regular with Regular.

How are SIP returns calculated?

Each instalment buys units at the first NAV on or after your SIP date. Today's value is your total units times the latest NAV. The return shown is XIRR, which accounts for the timing of every instalment. Stamp duty, exit load and taxes are not included.

Where does the data come from?

Scheme details and NAVs published by AMFI, via mfapi.in. Data is refreshed daily after NAVs are published.

Is this investment advice?

No. mfcheck shows statistics from historical NAV data. It does not tell you what to do with any fund. Past performance may or may not be sustained in future.
